When many people think of black & white images they may feel it’s old fashioned or passé. After all we have color film and color movies now… and we’ve moved beyond that. However, black & white photography is noteworthy for important reasons: without the distraction of color, it invites you to stop and take a closer look at the essence of the subject matter. It can be dramatic and attention grabbing or subtle in its approach. It brings a visual dimension to the viewer that color simply does not.

Black & white photographs can work well together, embracing a certain theme or commonality. Whether shown alone or with other photographs, they can also look good on most any wall surface, be it white, beige or any color since they don’t compete with the underlying hue. In fact, they may actually enhance it. They also look best when mounted with a white mat and a black or dark frame. When properly sized, the mat and frame directs the viewer’s attention to the monochrome image providing for a clean-looking appearance.

Big Art for Big Walls

Note that to choose between Luster Photo and Archival Matte is choosing between a more black and white contrast verses a warmer image like Michael Kenna’s photogrph. While Kenna’s image gives up brighter whites and darker blacks it’s tonal range between the extremes may be better

FINE ART AMERICA PURCHASE/INFO

Coming from a somewhat artistic family, I’ve alway gravitated towards black & white photography. Before retiring and moving to Bangkok I made a point of visiting as many countries as I could taking along my Canon Rebel XT camera wherever I went. I’m also interested in abstract art, so I included many of those images on this website as well. Some of the designs derived from those images were used on tote bags sold on my other website, mydesignertotes.com.

If that weren’t enough, I’m also an author. Check out booksnart.website for information about my books and my color abstract wall art.

Enjoy exploring my websites !
